The 7 Best Mexican Restaurants In Costa Mesa

Descanso Restaurant

1555 Adams Ave #103, Costa Mesa, CA 92626, United States // +17144863798

Now, let’s dive fork-first into our Mexican fiesta starting with a hotspot that’s been firing up the Costa Mesa food scene since 2018 – the fabulous Descanso.

Now, let me tell you, my amigos, this place isn’t just another taqueria, it’s a modern take on the genre, a stage where cooking is not just a process but a live performance!

Their culinary artists create an engaging dining experience that is as colorful and vibrant as a Frida Kahlo painting.

Remember the first time you tasted a new, exotic flavor and your taste buds erupted in a joyous salsa dance? Well, Descanso’s menu is that experience magnified a hundred times over.

I mean, the El Toro Taco? The Al Pastor Quesadilla? Let’s not even talk about the burritos. Each item is a beautiful testament to the authentic flavors of Mexico that will awaken your tongue from its slumber.

Chile Relleno at Descanso - One of the best Mexican restaurants in Costa Mesa

My personal favorite, the Chile Relleno, is a game-changer. The chef crafted this dish before my eyes, making my mouth water with every sizzle and spice added to the mix.

Yet the experience is just as important as the food; it’s a truly engaging culinary extravaganza that entertains as well as it satisfies.

What I love most about Descanso is their conviction that we deserve nothing but the best when it comes to Mexican food.

From using only top-notch ingredients to providing a warm, welcoming environment, they make you feel right at home – all while serving you a plate of drool-worthy Mexican delicacies.  And that, my foodie friends, is exactly why they’ve earned a well-deserved spot on our list.

So next time you’re in Costa Mesa, do yourself a flavor favor and stop by Descanso.

El Mercado Modern Cuisine

301 N Spurgeon St, Santa Ana, CA 92701, United States // +17143382446

This chic spot effortlessly marries modern flair with traditional Mexican warmth, creating a truly unique and relaxed ambiance.

Now, let’s not beat around the guava bush – this isn’t your abuela’s cocina. Nope, El Mercado is serving up a contemporary spin on our favorite Mexican classics. And boy, do they know how to mix a craft cocktail!

I decided to go during their Happy Hour – and what a happy hour it was! After being seduced by their drinks menu, my friends and I decided to sample their Sauvignon Blanc, Paloma, Old Fashioned, and Margarita.

Yes, we did get a second round – because when you’re in cocktail paradise, why would you ever want to leave?

Let me tantalize your taste buds a bit: imagine indulging in chips and guacamole, served with a side of…wait for it…crickets! You read right; trust me, they’re surprisingly crunchy and delicious.

But don’t worry; there was plenty more – the succulent carnitas, the melt-in-your-mouth pork belly tacos, and a chicken quesadilla that had me swooning. Not to mention the vibrant aguachile and irresistible empanadas.

Oh, and did I mention dessert? Their coconut ice cream was the perfect palate cleanser, light and refreshing, while the Oaxaca flourless chocolate cake served with ice cream was the proverbial cherry on top – rich, decadent, and oh-so-satisfying.

While the wait for our Happy Hour feast was a touch longer than expected, the live music more than made up for it.

I was utterly swept up by the sweet strums of the guitar and the soothing serenade of the talented musician.

El Mercado Modern Cuisine isn’t just a meal, it’s a culinary adventure. And with the attentive service, you’ll feel like you’re on a first-class journey. So buckle up, foodies – your next stop in Costa Mesa just might be your favorite!

You can practically taste the passion in every burrito, taco, and combo platter they whip up. The prices? Totally in sync with the delicious fare you’re getting.

Now, let me share a little story from my visit. I ventured in one morning with a desire (pun absolutely intended) for a breakfast burrito.

Now, if I do say so myself, I’m a bit of a chorizo snob. But I decided to take the plunge and order their chorizo burrito

That was like a delicious symphony in my mouth! Extra points for using hash brown potatoes, which are a personal favorite of mine.

My friend, ever the egg, potato, and cheese lover, had her own burrito to tackle. She was blown away by the generous portion of ingredients, and I could tell she had found her new breakfast go-to.

So, whether you’re a Costa Mesa local or just passing through, Hank’s is a spot you absolutely cannot miss. It’s honest, it’s delicious, and it’s so very Costa Mesa.

For me, the stars of the show were the Enchiladas Rancheras and the Mahi Mahi Mi Casa – both dishes filled with so much flavor.

With every bite, I was taken right into the heart of Mexico.  And the Fiesta Salad added a refreshing twist to the meal.

While you’re navigating through this exciting culinary journey, don’t forget to sip on one of their acclaimed margaritas. Trust me; it’s the perfect companion to the lively, festive atmosphere.

Taco María

3313 Hyland Ave, Costa Mesa, CA 92626, United States // +17145388444

Next up this Michelin-starred treasure masterfully bridges the culinary gap between Mexican tradition and Californian innovation.

Taco María is the brainchild of the ingenious Chef Salgado, who invites you into what feels like his home kitchen, spinning tales of his heritage through every dish.

And it’s not just the mouth-watering Alta California cuisine that’s got everyone buzzing – it’s the warmth, the charm, and the intimacy that draws you in, wrapping you up like a cozy Mexican blanket on a chilly night.

And speaking of chilly nights, whether you’re dining under the twinkling stars on their patio, or scoring a coveted seat inside next to the open kitchen, you’re in for a showstopper of a meal. My advice? Book early, folks! This place is hot property.

Every dish here is a story elegantly told. The menu is a compelling tapestry of fresh tacos, homemade salsas, luscious moles, and sea-fresh dishes.

Their crab ceviche tostada and Tijuana-inspired Caesar salad? I’m still dreaming about the harmonious dance of flavors and textures.

Then there was the pièce de résistance: ribeye carne asada, served with a DIY taco setup complete with blue corn tortillas, salsa, herbs, and avocado.

Building my own taco felt like an adventure in every bite, each one better than the last. And let’s not forget about the strawberry Jamaica agua fresca and the Michelada with house-made chile sauce – sips of pure bliss!

Finally, for dessert, we indulged in the Pastel de Piloncillo, a soul-satisfying cake reminiscent of sticky toffee pudding.

Pair that with the MX vanilla bean frozen custard; every bite was a mix of warm and cool delight.

Friends, Taco María, isn’t just a dining experience; it’s an edible love letter to Mexican cuisine. So, the next time you find yourself in Costa Mesa, do your taste buds a favor and drop by Taco María.

Last time I read your lists. You put Mi Casa on it?? People only go there for the stuff drinks. They cover everything up in wads of cheese and the menu is the most basic. I give them a 3. And while I’m at it, Hanks?? You must be kidding!!
