Basil’s Downtown

120 N. Congress St., Jackson, MS 39201, United States // +16019449888

Let me start this article by taking you on a culinary adventure I had at Basil’s Downtown, a delightful Italian café nestled in the heart of Jackson, Mississippi’s vibrant capital city.

This cozy spot had me smitten from the get-go with its relaxed ambiance, making me feel like I had been transported to a little corner of Italy right here in a downtown Jackson restaurant.

As I stepped in, the café was buzzing with warmth and the intoxicating aromas of paninis, pasta, and the sweet allure of housemade desserts.

I had high hopes for a fantastic lunch because of the setting’s positive energy, and I’m pleased to say that it did not disappoint!

Basil’s has this nifty order-at-the-counter system. It’s like a symphony of organized chaos that somehow works perfectly.

They should be commended for their meticulousness and care in the meal preparation process.

Primer Rib sandwich at Basil's - One of the best restaurants in jackson ms downtown

On this visit, I decided to try their daily special – a Prime Rib Sandwich served with gravy for dipping and a cup of their Corn & Crab Chowder. Now, I fancy myself a chowder connoisseur, and I have to tell you, their version was simply sublime.

Then came the moment of truth – the sandwich dunked in gravy. Friends, this is where the magic happened! That gravy had me saying “WOW” out loud.

It was nothing short of an orchestra of flavors playing a beautiful symphony on my taste buds. I could taste a hint of wine, a surprise that elevated the gravy to something beyond delightful.

It was so excellent that after eating my sandwich, I couldn’t help but eat the rest with a soup spoon. Yes, I did that, and I’m not even sorry!

But it wasn’t just the food that made the visit special; the service was equally memorable. The personnel never rushed us and made us feel at home.

It felt like dining in a friend’s home rather than a restaurant in the middle of a bustling city!

The interior, with its understated elegance, pulsates with a warm, inviting atmosphere, mirroring its acclaim among those who frequent this historical gem.

The essence of the Mayflower’s charm lies not just in its main dishes but in its daily specials and sides, like the field peas, which elevate simple ingredients to a level of sublime taste.

From the moment we stepped inside, the rock ‘n’ roll soul of Hal & Mal’s enveloped us, its funky vibes resonating through the multi-roomed venue.

The warm welcome by the hostess set the tone for an evening of exceptional service and culinary delights. Our waitress, brimming with friendliness, ensured our comfort and was eager to share her recommendations.

The culinary journey began with their gumbo—a dish that promised and delivered with its perfectly balanced flavors, not too spicy but richly seasoned, a delightful prelude to the main course.

po'boy

My friend opted for the red beans and rice with andouille sausage, a generous half portion that rivaled the size of a full portion elsewhere, a testament to the hearty Southern hospitality Hal & Mal’s is renowned for.

My choice, the half and half po’boy, marrying the succulent flavors of shrimp and oysters, was a revelation.

Each bite into the lightly coated, perfectly fried seafood, complemented by the full ensemble of dressings, was a taste of the Gulf’s bounty, masterfully prepared.

Our culinary escapade culminated in a sweet finale of cheesecake and key lime pie, each dessert a perfect echo of the meal’s preceding excellence.

What struck me about Martin’s is its welcoming vibe. It’s a haunt for locals who appreciate a good brew or two, not to mention a cocktail list that reads like a compendium of dreams for the discerning drinker.

Oh, and don’t forget; some of the best food Jackson has to offer.

My personal foodie highlight? A fantastic local treasure – redfish. Trust me; it was so lip-smackingly delicious that I was tempted to order a second helping right there and then!

But the star of the show didn’t stop at the food. It was Patty, the super-server who was a mine of great food suggestions and a dynamo at ensuring our experience was nothing short of excellent.

With a sense of culinary adventure, I ordered the pig ear sandwich with a daring choice of heat—hot. Initially, the prospect of eating pig’s ear might seem formidable, but the leap of faith is richly rewarded.

Estelle Southern Table emerges as a beacon of farm-to-table American cuisine, marrying the rustic charm of Southern cooking with the sophistication of modern culinary trends.

The interior, with its fashionable, lofty surroundings, exuded an elegant vibe that was both inviting and impressive.

The meal commenced with a gesture of hospitality: complimentary cheese bread and butter, a simple yet delightful introduction to the flavors that lay ahead.

The fried oysters, our choice of appetizer, were a revelation—crisp on the outside, tender on the inside, and bursting with the taste of the sea.

The centerpiece of the evening was the grilled redfish. Presented with an artistry that matched its flavor, the dish was a layered masterpiece.

At its base lay succulent lobster, crowned with creamy avocado and the star of the plate, the redfish, each layer harmonizing with the next.

The finishing touch of tomato jam added a tangy sweetness that elevated the dish to new heights.

The portion was generous, affirming the restaurant’s commitment to value as well as quality.

Saltine Restaurant emerges as a shining example of modern Southern dining, particularly known for its creative seafood dishes and artisanal cocktails.

The service from our waitress set a high bar for the meal to come, marking the beginning of a truly special dining experience.

On a special Wednesday, I opted for the lunch plate, traditionally offering fried chicken and gravy, but with a personal twist—I chose grilled chicken.

My selection was accompanied by a sweet potato and Brussels sprouts, creating a delightful harmony of flavors.

The meal was so impeccably prepared that I found myself savoring each bite until my plate was spotless.

The standout of the meal, however, was the cinnamon roll cheesecake. Finding words to encapsulate its excellence is a challenge; it was a dessert of such magnitude and delectability that sharing it felt like a sacrifice, albeit one made easier by the desire to let my family in on the extraordinary flavors.

Our culinary exploration also led us to try the shrimp and lobster spring rolls and the oysters Lafitte—oysters enhanced with wood-fired charm, accompanied by crawfish tails and bacon, a true testament to the richness of Southern culinary traditions.

My main course, the comeback chicken sandwich, was a testament to Saltine’s generous portions and bold flavors.

It was so hearty that I resorted to using a fork and knife, a departure from my usual dining habits, driven by curiosity fueled by glowing reviews.

This choice proved to be more than a meal; it was an indulgence, embodying Saltine Restaurant’s commitment to big flavors and even bigger portions.

Diving into the menu, it was clear that La Cour prides itself on offering an array of dishes designed to cater to a diverse palate, from the meat lover to the vegetarian. Each dish was a testament to the thought and care put into its preparation.

The stuffed mushroom appetizer, generously sized, was an ideal start to our meal, hinting at the culinary craftsmanship that defines La Cour.

The blackened chicken with crawfish cream sauce was my choice for the evening, a decision made all the sweeter by the option to substitute French vegetables for the traditional dirty rice—a choice that showcased the kitchen’s flexibility and commitment to diner satisfaction.

The dish itself was a marvel, perfectly seasoned and cooked, with the crawfish cream sauce providing a rich, indulgent complement to the tender chicken.

Cobb salad

My friend’s choice of the Cobb salad, dressed with Cajun ranch, was a vibrant, flavorful testament to La Cour’s ability to elevate classic dishes with a unique twist.

The combination of freshness and spice was a delight, proving that even the most familiar dishes can surprise and satisfy in new ways.

While the prices at La Cour might be a touch above the ordinary, the dining experience it offers is anything but.

Every bite justified the cost, delivering on the promise of high-quality ingredients, impeccable preparation, and flavors that linger in the memory long after the meal concludes.

Char Restaurant is a Southern-accented steakhouse that stands as a monument to culinary excellence and refined dining.

As I entered its clubby confines, I was greeted by an ambiance of luxury, where leather banquettes, warm woods, and a generously sized bar area promised an upscale dining experience.

We began with the daily soup, a broccoli and cheddar concoction that was nothing short of a revelation. Each spoonful was a burst of homey yet sophisticated flavors, setting a high bar for the courses to follow.

The main event, rib-eye steaks, did not disappoint. Expertly cooked, tender, and juicy, these steaks were a testament to Char’s commitment to quality and culinary mastery.

rib-eye

Capping off the meal was a pecan pie that could only be described as sublime. Each bite of this dessert was a journey through layers of sweetness, texture, and nuttiness—a fitting finale to an exceptional meal.

If there was one element I’d tweak, it would be the restaurant’s acoustics. The lively atmosphere, though brimming with energy, bordered on the boisterous, slightly at odds with the otherwise sophisticated setting.

Yet, this did little to detract from the overall wonderful experience of the night.

The combination of its sumptuous Southern-accented cuisine, the elegance of its setting, and the flawless service makes for an unforgettable dining experience.

Char promises—and delivers—a meal that will linger in your memory, leaving you eagerly anticipating your next visit.
