As I embarked on this delectable adventure during my pre-cruise press trip with the International Food, Wine, and Travel Writers Association, I couldn’t wait to dive into the restaurants in Surrey British Columbia, sampling everything from authentic Mexican tacos and Nepalese momos to the rich and flavorful dishes at Dominion Bar and Kitchen – a tantalizing glimpse of the epicurean delights Surrey has to offer.

The 7 Best Restaurants in Surrey British Columbia

Dominion Bar and Kitchen

13475 Central Ave Unit D1 // +1 (604)330-0229

A Tapestry of Flavors located at the heart of Surrey within the Civic Hotel, Dominion Bar + Kitchen beckons you with a picturesque view of Civic Plaza, a lively outdoor community hub.

Here, the city’s cultural diversity is celebrated through an innovative “New Canadian” menu that seamlessly weaves together the culinary influences of various cultures.

With a focus on locally sourced ingredients, signature cocktails, British Columbian wines, and craft beer, Dominion Bar + Kitchen is a true reflection of Surrey’s beauty in diversity.

During our stay at the Civic Hotel, breakfast was a delightful perk, graciously included as part of our stay due to my Marriott Loyalty privileges. Entering the restaurant from the lobby, the hostess invited us to help ourselves and choose a seat.

Its spacious bar area adorned with an array of chafing dishes and tempting cold food offerings to choose from. For those craving warmth, there was sizzling bacon, fluffy pancakes, and comforting oatmeal.

roasted tomatoes

The sautéed mushrooms added a touch of earthy elegance to the morning spread. Other mornings, they offered roasted tomatoes or sausage patties.

They were kind enough to make unseasoned potatoes for me as their seasoning was just a tad spicy for my early morning palate.

On the cooler side, we found a refreshing selection of pineapple, cantaloupe, and honeydew – a fruity trio that brought a burst of freshness to our plates.

Nearby, an assortment of pumpkin and sunflower seeds, sweet raisins, and an array of croissants and muffins awaited, promising a delightful mix of textures and flavors.

As for beverages, the options were as diverse as the Canadian morning sunshine. From classic cranberry and orange juices to invigorating lemon-infused water and a variety of black and herbal teas, there was something to cater to every palate.

And let’s not forget the coffee, a morning necessity for many, alongside a healthy touch with green smoothies and petite glasses of chia seed puddings – a delightful, nutritious surprise.

Come dinner, we ventured to the nearby mall to explore the food court’s offerings, a culinary expedition of its own.

Afterward, we returned to the comforts of the Civic Hotel to savor some edamame and a delectable Thai curry, the perfect finale to a busy day.

My Shanti by Vikram Vij

15869 Croydon Drive // +1(604) 560-4416

Vikram Vij’s Culinary Odyssey

Created by celebrity chef Vikram Vij, My Shanti is a culinary homage to the diversity and richness of Indian cuisine.

Explore a menu that reflects the unique flavors of different regions of India, from Gol Gappa to Wild Boar and Lamb Kabobs.

While many of us are familiar with Vikram Vij from Dragon’s Den, Canada’s original version of America’s ABC TV show Shark Tank, Vikram’s personal culinary journey shines through in every dish, making My Shanti a culinary delight.

From the moment I set eyes on My Shanti’s shimmery exterior, I suspected I was in for an extraordinary culinary adventure.

The restaurant’s façade was a vision of opulence, with silver accents that caught the sunlight and seemed to dance in the gentle Surrey breeze. It was an alluring invitation, promising a dining experience unlike any other.

As I stepped inside, I was greeted by a warmth that was as palpable as the exterior’s shimmer. My Shanti’s interior was a tapestry of India’s culinary heritage, brought to life through handcrafted murals that adorned the walls.

These murals, created by a family in India, supported them and allows us to enjoy the prolonged pictographs dance across the restaurant wall.

The intricate detailing and vibrant colors were a testament to the love and passion that went into their creation, and they set the stage for the culinary journey that awaited us.

Lamb Kabobs

The food at My Shanti is a celebration of India’s diverse and rich cuisine, and its menu was a testament to this devotion. Celebrity chef Vikram Vij’s masterpiece plates showcase the unique flavors of different regions of India.

From the moment we perused the menu, we knew we were in for a remarkable feast. But sometimes, as on press trips, you luck out and receive an entire tasting menu.

Our journey through India’s culinary landscape began with Gol Gappa, those crispy, hollow spheres filled with tantalizing, tangy goodness. The burst of flavors in each bite was like a culinary firework, setting the tone for what was to come.

My Shanti’s commitment to authenticity was evident in their dishes. We sampled Wild Boar and Lamb Kabobs, which were tender and flavorful.

The spices used in these dishes were a testament to the chef’s deep knowledge of Indian cuisine, and they transported us to the heart of India with every mouthful.

From the Chaat of Udaipur, a delightful combination of crispy, tangy, and spicy flavors, to the Jackfruit and Cauliflower Pakoras inspired by Kerala, every dish was a revelation.

The Chickpea, Sweet Potato, and Cashew Koftas from Old Delhi contained a medley of textures and tastes, creating a harmonious blend of flavors that transported us to the bustling streets of India.

Mussels bathed in a rich Vindaloo sauce, served with crispy papadoms, were a perfect balance of heat and tang, a reminder of India’s coastal influences.

The Chicken Korma from Rajasthan was a creamy delight, and Vikram’s Better Butter Chicken, a creamy tomato curry infused with fenugreek and spices, was an embodiment of culinary perfection.

The Wild Boar and Lamb Kebabs, with their succulent meat and fragrant spices, were nothing short of exquisite.

Chicken Korma

And let’s not forget the classic favorites, such as the golden, crispy samosas and freshly baked naan, which were the perfect companions for savoring the rich curries.

The most amazing Gunpowder Prawns from Bombay, enveloped in a sweet and sour masala and served with mini lentil crepes, were an explosion of flavors that left us craving more.

Vikram’s personal favorite, a creamy Cashew Portabello Mushroom served on naan with a generous dollop of masala paneer, was a dish that highlighted his unique culinary touch. Each bite was a symphony of creamy, earthy, and spicy notes that harmonized beautifully.

The culinary journey at My Shanti was not limited to food alone; it extended to the bar. Handcrafted cocktails like “Once Upon a Time in Mumbai,” featuring 100% rye, Sons of Vancouver amaretto, and bitters, were a delightful accompaniment to the meal.

The Mango Drip, a concoction of mango, tequila, citrus, and chili powder, was an exciting blend of sweet and heat.

In fact, the inclusion of chili powder was a recurring theme in many of the drinks, adding a spicy kick that perfectly complemented the bold flavors of the cuisine.

For those seeking alternatives to alcoholic beverages, My Shanti had a well-curated selection. With beer on tap, a range of whisky-based cocktails, and non-alcoholic treats like mango lassi and Bremner’s blueberry or black cherry juice, there was something for everyone.

What was truly exceptional was how My Shanti catered to dietary needs. For those with food intolerances, such as celiac disease, the restaurant offered thoughtful options that were just as delicious as the rest of the menu.

This inclusivity added another layer of appeal to the dining experience, making it a place where everyone could come together and enjoy the culinary wonders of India.

Gunpowder Prawns

The Sweet Corn Chicken Chowder was a creamy, comforting bowl that showcased the restaurant’s ability to infuse a variety of flavors into their menu.
