Martas Hotel is a small family-run property found on the island of Gili Trawangan, Indonesia.
The hotel is made up of bungalows surrounding the gorgeous pool, which serves as the property’s centerpiece. The bungalows each have a large fanned porch where you can lounge or even have your breakfast delivered.
Each bungalow has two floors, and there are several different room types to suit your needs. Each bathroom is downstairs, which means that the entire upstairs is your bedroom.
The bedrooms have been designed in a traditional Lombok style, featuring dark wood throughout. The rooms all include televisions and DVD players. These amenities proved useful when we were recovering from sunburns and wanted quiet nights at home just to relax. Be sure to check out the huge DVD collection found behind the front desk! Each room also includes a small refrigerator, and there is wifi throughout the property.
Breakfast was one of my favorite things about our stay. So many hotels are seriously neglectful when it comes to their included breakfasts, but Martas Hotel has one of the best complimentary breakfasts of any hotel I’ve visited. Each morning we were able to select juices, pancakes, omelets, fresh fruit, breads, coffee and tea.
Quiet nights are another huge benefit to staying at Martas Hotel. The location is ideal. You are within two minutes of walking to the main road, but are far enough off that you won’t be disturbed by nearby parties. Being so near the main road also ensures you have easy access to all the best restaurants and dive shops on the island.
The staff also help make Martas Hotel an incredible experience. On the second day of my stay, half of the employees knew me by name. By the time my stay was finished, almost all of them greeted me by name as I came and went. They are ever present, but never intrusive. They will even help to arrange bicycles or snorkeling, take care of your laundry, and recommend dive shops. They really went above and beyond to make the stay wonderful.
Martas Hotel is the perfect choice for your time on Gili Trawangan–cozy rooms in an ideal location, an amazing staff and a breakfast so good I would go back for it alone!

Travel writer and owner of the blog. My work has been featured on Fodors, Eater.com, International Living, and Great Escape Publishing, among many others. My story? Nearly six years ago, I left my job at an Oklahoma City law firm and embarked on a journey around the world. At the time, I thought I would only be gone for 6 months, but the more I traveled, the longer my bucket list became. Flashpacker describes how I travel. Rather than traveling as the normal world wise backpacker and staying in hostel dorms, I prefer a more comfortable experience, and typically stay in private rooms, take Ubers instead of taxis, and now use a suitcase instead of a backpack. Foodie, on the other hand, describes one of the key reasons why I travel. I love to pick a central “base camp” and then explore the surrounding area, really immersing myself in the culture and interacting with the people, and enjoying and exploring the food of an area is an essential part of this experience.
